TONY AWARD WINNER BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL PERFORMS ONE-NIGHT “SIMPLY BROADWAY” CONCERT AT THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE OCTOBER 6 PERFORMANCE BENEFITS THE ACTORS FUND AND THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE’S EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS LOS ANGELES (August 26, 2014) – The Actors Fund and the Geffen Playhouse continue their partnership with a special one-night benefit concert featuring Brian Stokes Mitchell on Monday, October 6 in the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse. The event features the Tony Award winner’s unique Broadway baritone style, exciting new arrangements and a performance that uses movement, evocative lighting and ambient sound effects for an imaginative evening of song. Stokes will be accompanied by his remarkable pianist of six years, Tedd Firth, offering hits from his recent and aptly titled album, “Simply Broadway.” Selections from Camelot, Porgy and Bess, Company, Sunday in the Park with George, Les Misérables and others will round-out the performance. Dubbed, “the last leading man,” by The New York Times, Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a successful career that spans Broadway, television, film and concert appearances with the country’s finest conductors and orchestras. He has received Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for his performances on Broadway in shows such as Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha, August Wilson’s King Hedley II and Ragtime. Other notable Broadway shows include Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jelly’s Last Jam, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and most recently in Much Ado About Nothing for The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park. This November, he will appear in New York’s City Center Encores! production of The Band Wagon. Television and film credits include: Trapper John M.D., Frasier, Glee, PBS’ Great Performances and Jumping the Broom, among others. He has been seen in Los Angeles in Ragtime, and South Pacific and Guys and Dolls at the Hollywood Bowl. Co-chairs for this exciting night include Annette Bening and Warren Beatty as well as Joseph Wender and Ann Colgin. Net proceeds from this partnership (in existence since 2011) will equally benefit The Actors Fund and the Geffen Playhouse’s education and outreach programs.
